Description

|
Woven as double panel and joined with hand stitched seam down center. Un-dyed natural wool with border design in deep blue. Blue dye is commercial. Fringe still includes original blue, red and orange yarn remnants which attached weaving to the loom.
The twill weave is typical of the Southwest Hispanic weaving traditions, especially for the jerga floor coverings that date back to the 19th century. This weaving shows several minor stains that may have been from being placed on the floor rather than a bed covering. It is very heavy: It weighs approximately 10 lbs. Weavers who have examined it estimate that it could be woven in the 1920’s either in New Mexico and brought to Colorado or woven in Colorado by weavers working in the New Mexico (Chimayo) tradition.
Size: 109 x 72
